After breakfast she asked for her scissors, which she has been very responsible with. I gave them to her with the instruction that she not let her brother use them and went in the other room to read a magazine. And I quickly dozed off. My kids have been sleeping terribly lately and I am plum tuckered.
So I slept through giving Emma her snack (doo doo #1) and did not supervise small children with scissors (doo doo #2). I woke up to little Matthew standing in front of me saying, "Mom. Emma cut me." My eyes flew open and once I ascertained that he was not bleeding my eyes wandered to his head. She had cut his hair to the scalp in at least 10 different patches all over his head.
I would love to say that I calmly explained to her about not cutting people's hair, but it was not so. After I completely freaked out at her, sent her to her room, and swept up Matthew's gorgeous red hair (and some of Emma's too!) from all over the kitchen floor I heard her sobbing in her room and realized I never did give her that snack! I ran upstairs and checked her and she was at 67. Her target range is 100-200.
This was one of those days that I realize, once again, that with a child with diabetes, I don't have the luxury of down time - of not being on the ball all the time. Sometimes the pressure kind of gets to me!
She always feels so bad for a while after a low blood sugar and I hate it!
So we went off to Great Clips, where I had Matthew and Emma's hair cut just a week and a half ago and had him checked out. There was no way to work around her fabulous cut job, so he is sporting a buzz. So I paid $20 - ten last time and ten this time - for him to be completely bald. Sweet.

Aww, don't beat yourself up. You're human. You love your kids. You're doing the very best you can. And they still love you and you're too cool not to love.
Don't feel bad. It happens. Everyone needs their down time. Sometimes those of us with kids with different needs just need down time in a different way. I hope your kids start sleeping better soon and that you get some rest. Hang in there you are doing a great job!
Sweet hair cut Amanda! Next time save the $10 and I can cut him bald! I have a sweet pair of clippers that has given identical haircuts to my boys on several occasions! Keep up the good work! You are doing a lot on your own but you are a great mom!
I'm sorry the kids haven't been sleeping well. When I'm tired I feel my worst at everything I do. At least your little man is a handsome baldy. Love ya friend!
What a rough day! It is hard finding down time, especially with kids with different needs! I cried when a little boy cut Brianna's hair to the scalp as she was being babysat! That was over a year ago, and it's finally growing out! I'm thinking she wouldn't look near as dapper as Matthew with a buzz! He's so cute!
I wish I could understand why all kids think they need to cut their own hair. I'm hoping that mystery gets solved before I have any little tikes. He does look very cute and grown up with his hair cut.
Don't worry Amanda, you're doing great! If motherhood were easy, we wouldn't have anything to blog about!
im so sorry, that does suck. but i have to admit, your kids are the cutest damn kids ive ever seen. your doing a great job and i admire you. miss you.
I feel your pain! I am so sorry about your double doo doo day. I think it must be a rite of passage for all kids to cut their hair - or their siblings in the case of our two little girls! So far three out of our four children have done it - and the fourth hasn't been allowed to use scissors yet - so I am sure it is only a matter of time... You are a fabulous mother and I admire your positive attitude in spite of the challenges that you face. I love you!
I'm waiting for the "hair-cut" day. I think it is something all children must experience. Love your posts!
you're a great mom and person manders! your little ones are a riot - matthew mooning the neighbors made my day! :)
